A First Information Report has been filed against 7,000 people in connection to the violence and vandalism that happened at the iPhone manufacturing plant in Karnataka, Wistron Private Limited in Kolar. These 7000 people include over 5,000 contract workers.
The company has claimed losses of over Rs 437.7 crores. The incident took place on December 12.
In the FIR registered at Vemagal police station, it was reported that damages have been done to the property, office materials, vehicles, and other infrastructure.
Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka CN Ashwath Narayan condemned the whole incident where hundreds of workers entered the Wistron manufacturing plant at Narasapura in Kolar forcibly and damaged the property.
Meanwhile, Apple Inc has also launched an investigation into the violence. “Apple is dedicated to ensuring everyone in our supply chain is treated with dignity and respect. We have teams on the ground and immediately launched a detailed investigation at Wistron’s Narasapura facility in India,” said Apple Inc in an official statement.
The iPhone and other electronics product manufacturer, Apple Inc has also stated that it is dispatching team members and auditors to the facility. “Our teams are in close touch with the local authorities and we’re offering our full support to their investigation,” the official statement said.
In the complaint filed by Wistron Pvt Ltd, the losses incurred due to damage and theft of mobile phones, laptops and other production machinery amounts to Rs 412 crore. In addition to that, the company has incurred a loss of over Rs 10 crore due to the damage to infrastructure and services.
As per the reports, the situation turned ugly over an ongoing wage dispute.
